Barcelona Weekend Break
The museum of erotica, Barcelona
This museum is certainly not for everyone, but it receives a great many visitors and traces the history of erotica with approaching one thousand different exhibits.
Most of the exhibits track, or represent, the history of some aspect of sexuality or pornography, often in what can be a semi-humorous way. The displays cover different civilisations in the context of erotica and place them in the cultural and often religious values that were present at the time. These cultures include those of the east as well as the west.
Exhibits
The items on display vary wildly from early twentieth century movies, drawings and paintings (some by internationally recognised artists), to sculptures and writings.
Many Barcelona weekend breakers will never consider visiting such a museum, but those who do will be entertained. They will also become aware (in the presence of other nationalities) of how prudish and easily embarrassed we English speakers become in the presence of nudity and erotica.
As a tip, this is perhaps not a museum to wonder around on your own, simply because you feel (incorrectly) self conscious. Obviously it is not suitable for families or the young, but for two or more adults it can be very entertaining and amusing. Many people laugh out loud and most leave with smiles on their faces.
Location
Finding this museum is not difficult, it lies at La Rambla 96, Barcelona 08002, in the heart of the tourist district.
