Barcelona Weekend Break
Casa Vicens
Set in the Gracia district of Barcelona, Casa Vicens was Gaudi's first major building and it took from 1883 to 1888 to complete. Like most of his buildings it is now a world heritage site.
The Casa Vicens has facades that are primarily of a reddish brick, but Gaudi's features are unmistakable.
The building has turrets with inverted bell tops to them, elaborate projections at the building's corners and chequered mosaic tiling.
Other "stand out" design elements are the recessed "arch like" details that run around the building immediately beneath a full storey level of blue and white ceramic tiles and the fancy windows.
Casa Vicens is a private residence and, at the time of writing this, is currently up for sale.
