Barcelona Weekend Break
Colegio Teresiano
Built between 1888 and 1890, this is perhaps the only Gaudi building that, visually at least, demonstrates little of the design flair for which he subsequently became known.
The building was designed for the Teresian order of nuns and although highly detailed, has an absence of the loose shapes and flamboyant colours for which Gaudi would ultimately become associated.
The Colegio Teresiano is slightly dour in appearance with predominantly brown facades and narrow windows, but flashes of Gaudi still come to the surfaces, not least with the complex roof parapets which are highly castellated, but also highly decorative.
Elsewhere, the building uses regular geometry and plenty of vertical accents to create a grand and near monumental impression, and anyone who doubted Gaudi's ability to design conventionally should certainly see this structure.
In short, this building is very geometrical, very formal and almost the antithesis of everything that Gaudi’s subsequent work ultimately came to represent.
