Home Build Sauna Kits

Saunas originated in Finland, hence the name "Finnish sauna", where there use has become a social activity that is now ingrained into almost every Fin’s daily life. The number of saunas in Finland is roughly equal to the total population of the country – consequently, many Fins have a home sauna.

Saunas are now affordable

Sauna kits are no longer luxury products. A home sauna kit can be bought for as little as a few hundred dollars and it will fit into a room such as a bedroom, reception room or attic, or an outdoor building like a back yard shed.

There are two types of home sauna kit.

Material Sauna Kits

The first kind of sauna kit is a materials kit and it includes the timber required to line a sauna room and assemble the benches. A stove or heater will also be included. Material sauna kits comprise the sourced materials necessary to make the sauna and they require joinery skill to assemble. They allow the transforming of any regular room space into a working sauna.

Material sauna kits included the timber and instructions to cut and make bench seating, wall linings and towel racks, but they do not include a tool kit. There is usually a choice of stove or heater to go with the kit and this may be powered by gas or electricity.

Prefabricated Sauna Kits

The second kind of sauna kit is a prefabricated home sauna kit and this is more like a partially assembled sauna. It usually includes pre-assembled walls, floor and roof and it is normally free standing. These kits take about two hours to put together and they can be bought for indoor or outdoor (free-standing) applications.

Unlike material kits, prefabricated sauna kits arrive in an almost complete state. Normally the main items of structure like the walls, floor and roof are pre-assembled and only require bolting together. Most prefabricated sauna kits are stand-alone saunas and they come ready for indoor and outdoor locations. These kits do not require any assembly expertise or special tools.

Sauna stoves

Normally sauna stoves generate their heat by using hot rocks on the top of the stove or heater.

Finnish saunas are called hot rock saunas and they can generate dry heat, or a warm and humid atmosphere. Most modern day Finnish saunas use electric stoves and they have no special ventilation requirement, other than a standard window.

The Infrared sauna heater

The infrared sauna heater is an alternative to the conventional gas, wood or electric stove heater. It uses infrared rays to radiate heat directly to the skin and to create the impression of a hot sauna room, but it does this without making the skin feel hot.

Infra-red sauna are fast to use as they require little in the way of heat up or cool down time and they are cheap to run.

Summary

Home saunas kits come in a wide range of self assembly options from prefabricated kits to material only sauna kits. Kits can be purchased that will fit into any room space and shape and at budgets that run from economy to luxury price tags.
