Barcelona Weekend Break

Mercat Boqueria

The Mercat San Josep (market) was built in 1840 and is the big fresh produce market in Barcelona city. It is a quite spectacular sight with stalls and displays that really do make the eyes boggle.

The reason it is mentioned here is because you are almost bound to pass by it if you spend a weekend break in Barcelona and it is well worth popping your head around the door and taking a quick look.

A few short decades ago most UK cities had a similar market, but those days are now gone and the Mercat San Josep is an example of how things once were all over the world.

The main market produce are fish, meats, fruit and vegetables (and flowers) and all are held in a large food hall which is open eight to eight every day except Sunday.

Tourist information

The market lies close to las Ramblas and the stalls are set out like works of art. If you have a camera you will find it hard not to take a photo or two.

The way in which the fruit and veg' displays are presented is a feast for the eyes.
