Barcelona Weekend Break
Montserrat Mountain and Basilica
If you want an excursion outside of Barcelona city, then the Montserrat mountain and a basilica
that sits part of the way up it is a great way to spend a few hours. The mountain summit (San Jerome) ascends to over 4,000 feet in height and is a spectacular sight, particularly on a clear day.
If, as is probably the case, you do not have a car, there are a number of companies offering half day tours and excursions to the mountain and surrounding area and they are well worth the time and expense.
There will probably be some links to companies offering Montserrat excursions on this page.
Montserrat translates to “Jagged” and aptly sums up the appearance of this tall rocky peak which is clearly visible from miles away and is composed of an unusual rock formation. When at, or close to, the mountain's summit the views are nothing short of breathtaking.
The route to the Montserrat mountain takes you through some of Barcelona province's most beautiful villages and most organized tours (in fact all) include a visit to the twelfth century Royal Basilica and the monastery (of Santa Maria) of Montserrat. This basilica is one of many on an important pilgrim's route and it has a spectacular location, nestled between some woods and the face of the mountain.
If you consider this kind of excursion, expect a great and visually filled few hours. The monastery is awe inspiring and the views are tremendous, but the route and elevation may intimidate those who are afraid of heights.
How to get there
Reaching the monastery (and the mountain top) can be achieved by a number of travel alternatives.
Cars and coaches are the most popular options, but there is the Montserrat railway (Funicular de Saint Joan), plus a special cable car which ascends the mountain.
There is also a main line train that travels from Barcelona's city station to the foot of the mountain allowing you to travel independently without a tour company or guide if you choose.
Tourist information
The basilica has a choir that offers recitals - Monday to Friday at approximately 1.00pm and 7.00pm and there is a full mass (with choir) on Sundays.
Interesting fact - The Island of Montserrat was named after this mountain.
