Barcelona Weekend Break
Passeig de Garcia
Although las Ramblas is probably the most famous street in Barcelona, the Passeig de Garcia is the avenue
with the best buildings, boutiques, restaurants and cafes - although it should be added that it is also the one with the highest prices.
On the Passeig de Garcia you will discover everything from gift shops to cinemas and there is even a massive up-market DIY store which is interesting to wonder around. It is the top shopping street in Barcelona.
The Passeig de Garcia has many things going for it, amongst which are two of Gaudi's famous buildings in the Casa Batllo and the Casa Mila, and the modernist theme continues with buildings like the Casa Pascual i Pons and the Casa Bassegoda. The Passeig de Garcia has many beautiful buildings lining its walkways.
The Passeig de Garcia stretches between the plaza de Espana and the Avenida Diagonal and its ornately decorated street lights are yet another of Gaudi's (early) works. The avenue is further enhanced by the inclusion of trees and even some small hedges.
If you do not like modernist architecture, do not despair, there are plenty of Neo-Classical and Gothic buildings on the Passeig de Garcia too.
It is hard to adequately describe what makes a "street" worthy of mention in a tourist guide, but as many visitors to Barcelona put it, the Passeig de Garcia is the closest thing that this city has to a Champs Elysees and any weekend break to Barcelona would be amiss if it were omitted.
Tourist information
This street is a must visit location for its shopping, cafes and architecture, but it will be busy with tourist throughout the year.
