Barcelona Weekend Break
Sitges
Sitges has become a popular place to visit for those staying in Barcelona and wishing to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for the day. It offers an old town with a number of attractive architectural highlights and it has a charm and atmosphere that is very different to the large metropolis of Barcelona. In short it makes a great day out and a relaxing escape.
For many the high point of Sitges is its impressive coastline with seventeen different beaches, many of them small and intimate. This makes Sitges ideal for a day mixing exploring and sunbathing. But this is also a locality with some genuine Spanish heritage and this heritage is demonstrated by the many fiestas that take place in the area, particularly during the main summer period. A number of these festivals are of real tourist interest and the organisers do make an effort to impress the holiday makers and visitors who come to see them.
A walk round the old town, day or night, is relaxing and interesting and there are some nice bars and restaurants to stop at when you feel ready to take a break from the sun. Eve so, the many local beaches are never far away.
The town has an impressive parish church and the Maricel Palace is definitely worth a look, as are the local museums. In all, this is a really good place to visit if you want to leave busy Barcelona for a day and casually wonder around a pretty town before having something to eat and spending the afternoon at the beach.
Sitges is very much a town where tourism is based around apartments and villas rather than cheap hotels, so the atmosphere is generally very good. It is also very self contained and this means that few who stay there make the half hour trip to Barcelona.
