Barcelona Weekend Break

Fiestas (festivals) in Barcelona

The greater area or province of Barcelona is filled with towns and villages and everyone of these hamlets, however large or small, has its own fiestas.

What you can expect to see, hear and eat at a fiesta depends on what it is celebrating, or commemorating and how large or small it is. Many fiestas include music and dance and the gastronomic festivals normally include food and wine as well.

Fiestas are usually happy occasions and although some of the larger events have been “tweeked” to provide a tourist spectacle, most remain authentic and form an important connection with a communities history or faith.

In total the Barcelona province has over 300 different festival celebrations and that means that finding a fiesta close to Barcelona is never difficult, whatever the time of year.

Some fiestas arrive on a fixed day or date annually, but others relate to a more flexible calendar position by occurring on e.g. the last Sunday of a particular month.

The best way to find out where and when any festivals are taking place during your weekend break is to check in with a local tourist office while you are in Barcelona. Most of the Barcelona city tourist offices can usually give schedules, directions and sometimes local maps to the festival destination in question.

The dates shown are for the 2007 fiesta season and may vary slightly for subsequent years, so please check.

For a complete list of the Barcelona province’s fiestas, see this website (which unfortunately is in Spanish only) barcelona.fiestas.net It has several pages listing the fiestas chronologically and includes nearly all of the towns and smaller villages in the province.
